Spec-Driven Development
Why specifications act as a practical operating model for implementation, review, and communication rather than as a separate documentation afterthought.
Spec-driven development is an approach in which implementation follows an explicit description of product behavior, constraints, and intent. The specification is not only a requirements document. It becomes a shared reference point for developers, reviewers, maintainers, and stakeholders.
In practice, a good specification explains what a system should do, what it should not do, what quality rules apply, and how success will be judged. That makes it different from a backlog item, a demo, or an architecture sketch. Those artifacts can be useful, but they rarely carry the same level of durable intent.
The value of spec-driven work is not theoretical. It reduces ambiguity. When several people touch the same feature over time, or when an AI assistant generates part of the implementation, the specification limits drift by making the expected outcome visible before coding decisions accumulate.
This approach does not require a rigid waterfall process. Specifications can evolve. They can be small or large. What matters is that the implementation can be checked against something more stable than memory or habit.
